What is the GDPR?

The European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) governs the processing of data relating to people based within the EU. It aims to give individuals more control over their privacy and to create a legal framework for data protection.

Although Switzerland is not a member state of the European Union, it would be wrong to assume that it is not directly affected by the Regulation. After all, the Internet is not confined to national borders. Every website that can be accessed from within the EU territories is potentially subject to the new legislation. This means that anyone who processes – or even just collects – data from their EU-based visitors could fall foul of the GDPR.
